WHAT MINISTERS WANT YOU TO KNOW
From Allen McWhite/Interim Pastor
Greetings from North Greenville University and the big city of Tigerville, South Carolina! As I write you, I must confess that I am still a bit light-headed from 40-plus hours of travel back from the Middle East. I spent Spring Break with a group of our students teaching English in a local school, visiting in Muslim homes, and seeking opportunities to be salt and light in a place of great spiritual darkness. It was an awesome time of seeing God at work and realizing, again, how important our witness for Jesus is, especially in those places where there is little or no access to the gospel.
As you likely know by now, your Interim Search Committee has invited me to join you during this strategic time in the life of Brushy Creek Baptist Church. After much prayer, and also after meeting with your wonderful ministry staff, I have strongly sensed the leadership of the Lord to accept this invitation. I am both honored and humbled to join you in our common journey of following Christ, exalting His name, and making disciples of all nations. I promise you that I will do everything I can to continue in the model that your incredible pastor, Ralph Carter, has set for all of us. I know that his desire was to serve others-before self, faithfully proclaim God's Word-without fear, and honor Christ-above all. My commitment to you is to do no less because anything less is not worthy of our Lord.
As I shared with your ministry staff, I am a fairly simple, straight-forward kind of person. What you see will usually be exactly what you get! I have a horse, a goat, chickens, a pond full of koi, and several barn cats-one of which I am terribly afraid is pregnant (Kittens anyone? PLEASE!!!). I enjoy gardening and wood working, and I am a huge fan of the Andy Griffith Show (If I could live anywhere, it would probably be in Mayberry!). I play the guitar, a little banjo, a little keyboard, and I even have a jaws harp! I love to mimic Elvis, Willie Nelson, and Louis Armstrong. My greatest invention is a Spanking Machine that I built for my grandchildren (I'll have to tell you that story sometime!). I wear jeans and a sports coat to work-every day. I don't golf (I've lost a fortune in golf balls), but I do love to fish. I am a big fan of baseball and college football, but I manage to stay out of the Clemson-USC rivalry since I graduated from the Citadel-"Go Bulldogs!" I enjoy putting a variety of animals on the grill, smoker, or barbecue pit, and I love Thai food.
Many of you know my wife, Ruth, and I have to tell you that I am better known as "Ruth's husband" than anything else. She is a gifted Bible teacher, conference speaker, and a GREAT cook. She works part-time at North Greenville University as the Director of Women's Ministries. We have been married 34 years, and we have 5 children, one of whom (my oldest son) is a missionary in the Czech Republic. We also have 7 grandchildren-with #8 on the way!
Over the years of my ministry I have been privileged to serve as a missionary with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Latin America, and I have also pastored three churches, full time. In the 15 years that I have been at North Greenville University, I have served almost a dozen churches in an interim role. I have been a military chaplain, a chaplain in a children's home, and a volunteer firefighter/chaplain with a county fire department. I presently serve, part-time, as a sworn and commissioned law enforcement officer with the State of South Carolina. I have a very special place in my heart for law enforcement as my younger son is police officer with the Greer Police Department.
I just wanted to share some things about me with you so that, when you see me, I hopefully won't seem like a total stranger! My job, now, is to get to know YOU! Please help me by sharing your stories and by telling me your names-over and over again-until I get them straight. That will likely take a little time, but if you will be patient with me, I will learn them.
Although my official starting date is April 2, I am looking forward to worshipping with you this coming Sunday (March 26) and celebrating what God is doing through Brushy Creek to reach the nations with the gospel. Missions is my heartbeat and my passion, so I can think of no better time for me to "jump in" and become part of the family!
Please know that I am praying for each of you and for this opportunity that God has given us to walk a part of this journey together. In His p
rovidence He has brought us together for this time and for this purpose. I can't wait to see all that He is going to do.
Until ALL nations worship!
