Brushy Creek Baptist Church Taylors has sprung from the humblest of roots to be called "The Mother Church of Greenville." It's a church that's established many, many others in the Upstate - including the first representations of First Baptist Church Greenville and Taylors First Baptist Church. Today, Brushy Creek is a place where thousands of members and visitors have found a home to worship God.
BCBC was born in June of 1794, when five men (supported by a tiny church on the Tyger River) gathered in a small log structure near Brushy Creek off the Enoree River. The group started growing and worshiping in different meeting houses and in a wooded area behind a brick house on Old Spartanburg Road.
Records show about 40 members attending the church before “The Great Revival” in 1831. One year later, 190 members are listed. Church membership fluctuated during the rest of the 1800s, as the Civil War ensued and black members left Brushy Creek to form Enoree Fork Baptist Church. It was during this time BCBC started one of the first Sunday Schools in Greenville.
In 1902, members dedicated a new church building on the corner of Old Spartanburg Road and Brushy Creek Road. For the next 90 years, they would add two structures and a cemetery, while embracing the beginnings of many modern-day programs, including the Women’s Ministries, World Missions Offering, Vacation Bible School, Bible Drills, and Christian Sports Teams. By the 1990s, Brushy Creek had grown to 1,400 members and needed double worship services and Sunday Schools.
In 1994, BCBC built a new facility on 20 acres across the street at 4999 Old Spartanburg Road. It remains the centerpiece of activity for thousands living in Taylors, Greer, Greenville and the Golden Strip, as well as Travelers Rest and Blue Ridge. On any given day, you’ll find folks gathering on campus to work, play, pray and serve.
No matter the location, year or pastor, Brushy Creek has experienced two constants. The first, our name. Brushy Creek is the only church in the Upstate to keep the same name for 200+ years. The last constant is our biggest - the desire to grow closer to God in all we do.
